Teaching & Research Assistantship (TA/RA) Scholarship Policy

  1. Purpose

The Teaching Assistantship (TA) and Research Assistantship (RA) Scholarship Policy establishes a structured framework through which the National Institute of Technology (NIT) supports academically outstanding graduate students while strengthening the university’s teaching and research activities.

TA and RA positions are offered on a highly competitive basis to students who have secured admission to NIT graduate programs strictly on merit through the university’s standard admission procedures. These assistantships aim to attract high-potential students, support faculty teaching and research, and provide students with valuable academic and professional development opportunities.

Students appointed as Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants will receive a 100% scholarship on tuition fee only, along with a monthly stipend of Rs. 40,000. In return, recipients are expected to contribute 25 hours of academic service per week during the academic year, supporting faculty in teaching, research, and related academic activities.

This policy applies only to admitted graduate students who formally apply for and are selected for TA/RA positions through the university’s defined selection process.

  1. Selection Process
    • Position Requisition and Application
  • The selection process begins with Departmental Heads identifying their teaching and research support requirements and submitting requisitions for TA and RA positions to their respective Deans.
  • The Deans will review departmental requests and seek approval from the Academic Leadership, in consultation with the Vice Chancellor, for the final number and allocation of TA and RA positions.
  • Once approved, available TA and RA positions will be announced to all students admitted to NIT’s graduate programs. Interested students may apply for these positions through the prescribed application process. Only students who formally apply for TA/RA positions will be considered.

  • Interview, Evaluation, and Appointment
  • Applicants will undergo interviews and evaluations conducted by relevant faculty members and academic leadership to assess their teaching readiness, research potential, academic capability, and professional suitability.
  • Based on the evaluation process, the most qualified candidates will be selected and formally appointed as Teaching Assistants (TA) or Research Assistants (RA).
