Professor, Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research
Dr. Muhammad Adnan Siddique
Dr. Muhammad Adnan Siddique is a Professor in the School of Data Science and Information Technology, a 2021 National Geographic Explorer, an Erasmus Mundus alumnus, and the current Chair of the international IEEE GRSS Technical Committee on Remote Sensing Environment, Analysis & Climate Change (REACT). In his role as Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research, he brings together academic research, expertise in applied geospatial engineering technologies, and international leadership experience.
Dr. Siddique works at the intersection of artificial intelligence and geospatial technology. He completed his Doctor of Sciences (Dr. sc.) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology – ETH Zurich, and subsequently he was awarded a post-doctoral grant for research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). His research focuses on environmental monitoring. Using radar interferometry, satellite tomography, and machine learning, his work supports the estimation of deformations culminating into landslides, and potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH) — contributing to climate resilience efforts in the region.
His research has attracted significant external funding. He is a co-Principal Investigator on a grant from the SNSF for landslide hazard assessment in Pakistan, awarded under the SPIRIT framework. He also received a research grant as Principal Investigator under the National Geographic Society and Microsoft's "AI for Earth" program. Dr. Siddique also won a grant from the National Center of GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA), Pakistan, to detect marine pollution caused by oil spill incidents in Pakistan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Arabian Sea.
Dr. Siddique graduated top of his class in his Bachelor of Engineering, earning the President's Gold Medal. He later completed the Erasmus Mundus double-degree Masters program, graduating with honors ("MatrĂcula de Honor") for his graduate thesis from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona. He has published more than 30 papers in journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, and serves as a reviewer for leading journals in his field.
Dr. Siddique has taught graduate and undergraduate courses including Spatial Data Science and Remote Sensing. He also co-founded a technology venture, Créneau Private Limited, working on the practical application of research to environmental solutions.
At NIT, Dr. Siddique's priorities include strengthening the university's research output, mentoring graduate students, and building international research collaborations.
