Sarah Ashher

Sarah Ashher is a Lecturer at the School of Social Sciences, National Institute of Technology (NIT). She holds an MPhil in Linguistics and TESOL from Beaconhouse National University, graduating as the Gold Medalist of her department. She completed her Bachelor of Science in English Linguistics from Forman Christian College, where she graduated summa cum laude with a merit scholarship. She brings particular strength to developing effective assessment practices that support student learning and achievement. Her teaching approach focuses on creating an inclusive and engaging classroom environment that enables students to develop competence, critical thinking, and confidence in navigating academic and communicative demands.

Her research interests center on linguistics, gender, and identity, with a focus on South Asia, critical discourse analysis, multimodality, and sociolinguistics. Her recent research applies multimodal critical discourse analysis to resistance discourse in Pakistani media, intersecting gender, culture, semiotics, and feminist theory. Her published work examines the semiotics of dress and appearance in American fiction. She has also designed syllabi and assessments for different learner levels, including an ESP syllabus for working professionals informed by a needs analysis of accountants’ workplace language requirements. She has presented her research at academic conferences on topics including linguistic identity, textbook discourse, and gendered resistance in South Asian media.
